Two MUST HAVE iPhone apps

For all of you who use an iphone and take pictures of family & friends, the following two apps are incredible.

The first app which I have already posted an image from is “Panorama 360″. The ease of use is incredible and the app esentially paints in the photo as you pan the camera around. I find this app to be especially useful for built environment design professionals. When you need to return to a space and understand context and relation, this app will be able to show it all. Tons o’ fun.

The second app I see as a must have is called “Instagram”. It lets you take an image and then overlay diffrent preset processing over the image, you can also add a tilt/shift option which gives you a selective focus look, which really is fun. I’m going to be framing some of my family shot and thats saying a lot coming from a photographer.

I thought this was a rather fun shoot with a creative use of van, location, subject and the subjects work. The two images show the final product and the set-up to get there.

Latest results from the new Canon 17mm ts-e

Here are the first results from my new Canon 17mm ts-e. I have the old 24 ts and I previously used the 17-40 for the wider shots but was running into too many issues with not getting the perspective I needed and getting alot of distortion. The new 17ts-e is great with almost no distortion or CA. Worth every penny! A little nerve racking with that bulbous lens poking out though.

This shoot was for Maine Home Design for thier “Theory” article. We shot the subject on the left first, then the two on the right second and then blended the two in post with an added background.

These two images are from a recent photo shoot of Bethel Maine for Maine Magazine. It was a rather difficult shoot as the magazine wanted it to look wintery and Christmas like, unfortunately it was 60 degrees and raining. These two images grab me in some way.

Sorry to have not posted anything for so long but this summer has been crazy with both architectural and commercial work. As soon as I can catch my breath I’ll be posting and such again. But for now… I’ll share a shoot we did for a solo project for Dave Gutter, (lead singer for Rustic Overtones) and Evan Casa. We used fresnel lights and layering to get the look we wanted and it was shot on Main St. In Biddeford Maine with mosquitos, drunks, rubberneckers, and 5 year old kids who should have been at home in bed. Kardex

Kardex Europe bought out the US sister company and I was called in to shoot the building (in PA) for the anual report. As you can see to the left of the frame we had the local fire dept. out and spraying down the build and lot. Could not have done the shoot without them.

Bright Built Barn

This was another very cold shoot, but the subject was incredible. The Bright Built Barn is essentially self sustaining and puts energy back into the grid! We thought a night “glow” shot would do it justice, but man was it cold.

The Last of the Home Theaters

This theater/studio is one of the top in the nation, $140,000 in speakers, maybe $180,000 in wiring, and who knows what else. The owner gave me a demonstration after I was finished shooting, wow. It was as if you were actually there.

Underground Spaces

I I have always been attracted to underground spaces. Not really to spend time in them but to just experience them and to wonder about the construction and design, it always gets me thinking about what’s above and the forces that are pushing down. The panoramic app for the iPhone is really incredible for capturing spaces.

I thought it would be fun to document our thanksgiving trip from Biddeford ME to Berrien Springs MI. It truly is a planes trains and automobiles trip. Biddeford to Boston to Philly to Chicago to Berrien. And to top things off we are currently stuck on the Chicago to South Bend IN train, there was a loud noise and a flash and now we are stuck. Got some cool iPhone photos though…

Coldest shoot ever…

We were up at 2:45am heading for Sunday River Maine. We were setting up by 5am and shooting at dawn. I believe the temp was in the teens and the wind was in the 20’s, not sure what that makes the wind-chill? Life in the north… My assistant was freezing, as was I. End result was worth it though.

Here’s a few process shots and the final image of a home theater I shot in Maine. Working in such small spaces has it’s challenges. Nothing that a little creativity couldn’t handle. Had to use one of my own images for the final image of the screen shot. The assignment was editorial and using a shot from an actual movie could have legal implications…

The lecture was very informative with a lot of good info on the business side of things as well as the process of each shoot. Well worth the time. Steve is a very open guy and you can tell he loves what he does.

A recent shoot for Barclay credit cards, involved a portrait and advertising shot of the LL Bean CEO and Barclay CEO. Literally had about 3 minutes for the ad shot and 2 minutes for the portrait.
